Iope Air Cushion XP

Iope Air Cushion - packaging
Iope Air Cushion XP – comes with a compact and a refill

I’ve long wanted to try out a makeup cushion and finally jumped on the bandwagon. I bought mine during a family visit to Pacific Mall last year (2015) and, as luck would have it, my baby was finally asleep in the stroller, so that gave me time to browse the store and ask the sales lady a couple of questions. She told me the Iope Air Cushion XP was the very first CC cushion to come to market and that one sells every 4 seconds. Having also watched many beauty gurus rave about this cushion, I caved in and bought one. [Note: I’m reading online that Iope has moved onto their 4th generation cushion this year so keep that in mind if you decide to purchase one of these.  This review is of the 3rd gen.]

So what is a cushion compact anyways? It’s basically a cushion soaked in product and stored in a compact. You use an applicator pad to press onto the cushion to pick up the product, then you pat it onto your face. Iope’s compact contains 30% mineral water, which is great for skin hydration. It also contains SPF 50+ and offers great coverage from the sun’s harmful UV rays.

The Packaging

Side of the box

The whole thing is packaged in a beautiful glossy box. I really appreciate good, aesthetically pleasing packaging and this hit the spot. The box itself is a navy blue with a silver top and bottom. The packaging makes me feel like it’s for a more mature crowd, and it’s simplistic look is for anyone.

Compact itself

The compact is white, with a reflective ring around the side. The top is a pearly white, whereas the bottom of the compact is a flat, opaque white.

The top of the lid also contains a mirror – handy!

Remove pad and lift second flap – seal sticker in place

When you take out the applicator pad, you flip another flap, and there’s a seal sticker in place. I’m a big fan of these seals as it ensures that the product has not been tampered with and that you will be the first person to actually touch the product. Bonus points in my book!

Remove the seal sticker and there’s the cushion soaked with CC cream!

Underside of applicator pad

The top of the applicator pad has a ribbon across the diameter, so you can insert 2-3 fingers and use it as a holder. The underside is blue and is the perfect partner to your cushion. It picks up product but doesn’t get soaked in! Coupled with the fact that these applicator pads don’t require any cleaning between uses, this is as convenient as it gets.

Instructions that also have English!

Instructions are always nice to read through, no matter what product it is. I’m glad there was an English section!

Instructions on how to change refill

Just in case anyone didn’t know how to change the refill (me!), there were instructions on how to do so.

Not pictured but you can see in the first picture is the refill pack. It’s sealed in an aluminum foil packet and contains a refill cushion as well as a new sponge. These cushions are designed to hold enough product for 3 months worth of daily use (according to the sales lady) so this box will last you half a year. I can’t comment on that since I don’t use mine daily. It’s been a year since I started using mine and I’m part way through my refill pack.

The Product

Iope Air Cushion - swatch
L: one swipe, R: patted in

The sales lady tried really hard to sell me the C21, which offers more coverage and is coloured “fair”. I opted for C23, which is more of a beige. The 21 made me look too white and I wanted a more natural look. As you can see in the picture above, it blends pretty well into my skin tone.

There were several colour and coverage options to choose from, but I’m reading now that Iope is on their 4th generation of the Air Cushion XP so this info will be moot. I may need to purchase this newer gen soon to compare!

With the applicator pad, push onto the cushion to pick up the product. Then, using a patting motion, gently pat the product onto your face, adding more product to areas that require more coverage. You can add more layers for more coverage, but I’m a light coverage kind of gal so I just do one application.

The Verdict

This is literally the perfect product for a 5-minute makeup routine. Being a glasses wearer, I need products that are absolutely foolproof for when my glasses are off (I have insanely high near sightedness). Open compact, pat onto face, done. Put on glasses to check for even coverage. Done!

It feels light on my skin but at the end of the day, I do feel a little bit of stickiness. And with all glasses-wearing woes, it starts to cake up where my glasses touch my nose. Throughout the day, I’ll use a clean finger to rub it back into the skin. Those would be my only complaints about this.
